Mystery labeling behind the food we are feeding our dogs

with Dr. Judy Morgan, DVM, CVA, CVCP, CVFT

You can read a dog food label front to back and still have no idea what is in the bag. That is not an accident — it is how the labeling rules are written.

Dr. Judy is an integrative veterinarian with over 40 years' experience, best-selling author of eight books, and certified in pet food formulation for commercial production by Kansas State University. She was trained in how the bag gets made — so when she reads a label out loud, she isn't guessing.

What you'll get, every episode

The honest version

Vets, farmers and dog people who'll tell you what the bag won't. No brand pitches, no scare tactics — just plain explanations of what you're buying.

One real dog

Nobody changes how they feed because of a nutrient chart. Every episode has a dog in it, named, with a before and an after.

One small change

Every guest ends by naming one thing you can do this week for under $20. Twenty-five minutes, one action. That's the deal.

Coming this season

Six themes we're working through, one guest at a time.

What's actually in the bag

Label literacy and the ultra-processing question.

Raw, reasonably

Safe handling, transitions, and the budget math.

Grown close to home

The Florida farmers and homesteaders who supply us.

The itch, the gut, the immune system

Why the most common reason a dog walks in is skin.

The long middle and the last chapter

Seniors, cancer, hospice, and feeding at the end.

Wild instincts, house dogs

Behavior, enrichment, chewing and movement.

Why a dog food shop makes a podcast

The most valuable thing that happens at The Wild Canine isn't the transaction. It's the conversation across the counter — someone arrives with an itchy dog, a hard diagnosis, or a bag they no longer trust, and leaves with a plan.

This show is that conversation, for everyone who'll never drive to Alachua. We're a small family-run raw food and nutrition store, sourcing as much as we can from local farmers and homesteaders — and we'd rather you understood your dog's food than simply bought ours.
